8 top tips to secure the perfect job

At a loose end with your job search? If you’re looking for your next role, words of advice from those in the know can make a real difference. We asked eight Jobcentre Plus Work Coaches to share their top tips for jobseekers looking to land their perfect role. Here’s what they said…

Top tip 1. Abdul

“If you do not have experience or want to change sectors, consider volunteering in the area that you want to work in. Firstly, it will give you invaluable experience and secondly it will increase your network. This will also show future employers that you are committed, hardworking and give you a positive example to put on your CV.”

Top tip 2: Bola

“For young people – Don’t worry about starting at the bottom of the job ladder as the skills you will pick up will be invaluable and set you in good stead for the future.”

Top tip 3: Miska

“Keep learning and gaining new skills wherever possible, as these can be transferable across many roles. Voluntary work can be great for this.”

Top tip 4: Akerz

“Be resilient and stay positive, the best opportunities may take a little longer to come about.”

Top tip 5: Shauna

“Have a plan with your short-term and long-term career goals. If you’re starting out in your career, consider applying for Kickstart, the scheme provides a 6-month job for 16 to 24 year olds on Universal Credit to help them gain the skills they need to secure employment.”

Top tip 6: Fozia

“If you’re unemployed and struggling financially, consider applying for Universal Credit to help with your living costs. You may be able to get it if you’re on a low income, out of work or you cannot work.”

Top tip 7: Gilbert

“Be confident and apply for the roles which you really want. Don’t let a health condition or disability stop you from applying for your perfect job. Access to Work can help with this. There are many supportive employers out there. Go for it!”

Top tip 8: Natalie

“Use social media for your job search; LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. Check out the Jobcentre Plus local Twitter accounts to find the latest vacancies available in your area.”
