Types of roles

The UK has attracted plenty of tech giants to set up business here such as Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, CISCO, IBM and many more. Silicon Roundabout (Tech City) and Manchester’s MediaCityUK are also home to high numbers of Tech and Digital start-ups.

Desirable skills

Even if you don’t have great coding knowledge, you could still have skills the digital and tech sector need. Communication, team working, time management and problem-solving skills are all important.

There are also many ways you can start to build your technical skills with online courses and training opportunities at all levels. The next section has more details.

If you already have good IT skills, there are hundreds of companies using tech platforms to transform their business, and each one needs a team of developers to do just that. To be a developer, you need great coding skills and an understanding of how to build software. So if you know your Java Script from your HTML, this versatile skill set makes you a valuable asset to a wide range of companies.

If it’s digital skills you are interested in, then the Skills Toolkit on the National Careers Service (external website) has free online courses at all levels – from providers like Google.
